Don’t tie the string up!

Posted on April 2, 2025April 2, 2025 by Henry-Paul Ontto-Panula

I recently reposted an older comic of mine on Instagram. It was about the emergency cords in accessible toilets and how the cords shouldn’t be tied up even for cleaning. Here is the comic, so it’s easier to find! Comic has alt-texts.

Comic, H-P is in an accessible toilet pointing to an emergency cord that's been tied up near the ceiling. He says: "PSA: this can kill"
Comic of 4 panels. Panel 1. H-P looks at the tied up cord and says "This is an emergency cord. I often see them tied up like this." Panel 2. H-P is now lying on the floor saying "What if I were to have a seizure? What if I fell down like this?" Panel 3. H-P looks at the string that's now straight and almost touches the floor saying " The cord needs to be almost on the ground or someone might die." Panel 4. H-P leans on the toilet and looks dramatic. He says: "tying up the cord makes an accessible toilet into an inaccessible one. Fix it!"

The comic was shared on Instagram quite a lot until one person, named Vulture on Instagram, told me he had made stickers that can be put on the cords to tell they shouldn’t be tied up! I promised to publish the printable files for the stickers for him, so that everyone can print the stickers at home and put them up in accessible toilets.

The finnish version of the sticker can be downloaded here: [LINK]

And the version with both finnish and english here: [LINK]

And this is how the sticker looks like when it’s on it’s place:

Photo of a cord that has a sticker on it. The sticker has a fallen stick figure and text "do NOT tie string up!"

So get printing and making all the accessible toilets in your area actually accessible! Thank you one more time to Vulture for letting me share the sticker print files!
